2nd Year

Introduction to Surgery:  A great course to have in your second year of studies. All of the doctors here speak really good English. The course is very well organized and you usually are in groups of 4 people. Small groups size allows you greater exposure. The students got to watch numerous surgeries and actually got to assist if they wanted to. Some of the students even get a chance to close the skin with sutures after the surgery. Other things we got to observe where colonoscopies, endoscopies and rectoscopies. We got acquainted with all the sutures; When to use them, what kind to use and we got to practice suturing. This was one of the most fun courses in the 2nd year curriculum. Plus a lot of the students shadow the surgeons during operations in their off time.

Epidemiology: Not a very good class. The main professor teaching the class does not speak good English. There are two teaching assistants that teach the environmental and dietary aspects of the class. Unfortunately majority of the class is taught by the main professor, luckily though the class lasts for only about two months. You usually have two classes per week.

Introduction to Internal Medicine: A good course that introduces you to the fundamentals of proper evaluation of a patient. They teach you what to look for in a patient that might suggest a disease. The course is very hands on. You will need your stethoscope, flashlight and neurological hammer. On each patient that you will see, you will have to listen to his lungs, heart, check his pulse, check his pupils, palpate the abdomen and do many other physical examinations. After your evaluation you chart your findings and then you meet in your group and discuss the patient’s disease. All the doctors that teach you speak very good English. They are always willing to answer any questions that you have and allow you to get a lot of hands on experience. This is another favorite class of many students.

Laboratory Diagnositics: Well organized class. It teaches you all about what kind of laboratory examinations are there, when to use them and what do the results mean. You even get to perform some of the laboratory tests on yourselves. These test include: urinalysis, complete blood count, blood sugar, microscopic blood smears and many others. The class is taught by great doctors, who speak great English. Most students enjoy this class.

Pharmacology: This is one of the most demanding classes of the II year in Medical School.  There is a lot of material to cover and to little time with your other studies. The lectures are semi interesting. Some professors are better then others. In my personal opinion I feel that in order to do well in this class you need to do a lot of studying on your own. The two midterms for this class are written and the final exam is multiple choice. If you average a 4 or more on both midterms then you will not have to take the final exam.  The best book for this class is Lipincott’s Pharmacology and you should also invest into getting some pharmacology flashcards.
